Site Overview

The intent of this site is to share basic information for the apprentice or aspiring falconer.   This site is aimed at providing a general overview of Falconry and Birds of Prey.  There are numerous resources on the Internet concerning falconry, some of which go into great detail.  I do not plan to join them.  You cannot, and will not learn falconry from a computer or book, period.  Informational resources supplement and provide excellent health reference, equipment selection criteria, and opinions on how to train a bird.   Falconry is the successful combination of art and skill.   To see the interaction between a true falconer and a conditioned raptor speaks for itself.  Unfortunately there are folks who never really get the hang of it.  It's not in their blood. The best analogy I can muster is this;

"You can study famous paintings for years, but may never paint"

The  "Art" of falconry is steeped in tradition and mystery for good reason. The obtainment of knowledge is to be reserved for those with the perseverance to uncover it's secrets. This process culls the "wanna -be's", the folks who only want to "own" a bird to be socially admired. This lengthy process helps to protect these magnificent creatures from falling into the hands of folks who are more interested in other people's perceptions than in respect for these amazing animals.  So with all due repect to my fellow Falconers I'll keep the secrets as they are.

Before we begin

For those of you that are seriously considering falconry let me offer one word, "Patience". As you get deeper into the "Art" you will realize how much work it is. You will hear directly conflicting opinions on how game hawking techniques are employed.  My advice to you is, to listen politely and ask questions.  If you truly listen you will eventually uncover it's secrets. -  Skip

If you are not familiar with the terms used in falconry please refer to the glossary page of this website if I use a word or phrase that seems a little odd.
